Birding Locations - Coast Range and Other Inland Spots

We are working on adding additional Birding Sites to our website.  In the meantime, do you have a favorite birding spot or birding tips for specific spots in Tillamook County? Please tell us about it, we'd love to include it!

Tillamook Forest Center
Located in the Tillamook State Forest off Highway 6, 22 miles east of Tillamook city. Extensive trail system with regular guided tours (see event calendar). No fee.
  • Excellent opportunity for coast range birds Northern Pygmy-Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Gray Jay and more

Nehalem Falls Campground
Located about 10 miles east of Nehalem on Foss Road via Highway 53 (directions see links below). Hiking trails to Nehalem Falls through old-growth forests.
  • Watch for Townsend's Solitaire, American Dipper and other coast range birds.

Munson Creek Falls
ADVISORY: No RV turnaround but plenty of parking for standard vehicles. No fee.
Located in Pleasant Valley off Highway 101, a short drive up single-lane road to parking area.
  • Falls worth seeing, but half-mile trail to the falls is often not birdy, occasional American Dipper
  • Park on the main road and walk the gravel road for best birding (Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Hermit Warblers, etc.)

Hebo Mountain and Lake
ADVISORY: Some of the meadows along the road are in Yamhill County so be aware when logging your sightings. Fee area.
Located east of Hebo via Hebo Mountain Road.  The lake offers a campground and trails. Continue up to Mount Hebo for spectacular views. Not always birdy, but worth a visit. Fee area.
  • The drive up offers opportunities to pull over for birds such as this Pygmy Owl
  • Watch for Gray Jays, Pileated Woodpeckers and other coast range birds
  • Easy walking path around the lake for wrens, warblers, jays and dippers
