Black Oystercatchers (common) is a year-round resident along the outer coast in Tillamook county. Look for them anywhere there are rocky shores or offshore rocks.
SPRING: Unlike other shorebirds, they nest on bare rock, often near gull and cormorant nests. Known nest locations include Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Haystack Rock (Cape Kiwanda). All are difficult to access and view. FALL/WINTER: For best viewing, visit Short Beach, where large numbers often gather and are easily observed. Additional information |
Black Turnstone (common) can be found any time except breeding season (mid-May to mid-August) along the outer coast and bays in Tillamook county. Look for them anywhere there are rocky shores, jetties, or offshore rocks.

Ruddy Turnstone (uncommon) are spring and fall transients along the outer coast. When present, they are often seen with Black Turnstone on offshore rocks and jetties.
